We study how existing spaces perform – and how they can change better.

We combine spatial analysis, environmental sensing, data on space use and user experience with Digital Twin methods and transformation scenario simulation.

Axonometric illustration of an interior. On the left, the existing space in black and white: people work at desks, talk and carry things, including a wheelchair user. On the right, the same space after transformation, highlighted in blue, with a new layout of zones for work, rest and movement.

Why Digital Upcycling?

Most of the spaces we will use in the coming decades already exist. Transforming them requires more than a technical assessment.

We need to understand how a space performs in real use, what conditions it creates and how people experience it. We develop methods that bring these layers together and allow changes to be tested before implementation.

  1. 4 sensors °C · RH · CO₂ · lx · dB(A)
  2. Stuffy {co2}
  3. Too hot by the windows {temp}
  4. Noisy by the entrance {noise}
  5. Desk by the entrance nobody sat here

Rather than studying each aspect separately – we integrate them into one research process.

  • Spacelayout, geometry, accessibility, spatial relations
  • Environmentthermal comfort, indoor air quality, light, acoustics, microclimate
  • Useactual space use, occupancy and patterns of use
  • ExperiencePOE, comfort, safety, privacy, dignity and accessibility
  • TransformationDigital Twin, simulations, transformation scenarios and recommendations

How we work

The method is iterative.

Data from real use and user experience are used to calibrate models, test variants and re-evaluate the space after the change.

Changing Place at Kino Nowe Horyzonty: an interior with dark tiles, a wheelchair-accessible washbasin, grab rails by the toilet and a bench along the wall.

Comfort Lab.

We run one of the first DigiUPLab pilots in the Changing Place at Kino Nowe Horyzonty in Wrocław. We study how a space for people who need assistance with transfers and personal care performs in real use – from wayfinding and equipment layout to environmental conditions, privacy, safety and dignity.
